Split (2016)

Directed and written by: M. Night Shyamalan

Three girls are kidnapped by a man with a diagnosed 23 distinct personalities. They must try to escape before the apparent emergence of a frightful new 24th.

TV's been throwing the trailer of Glass (2019) at me, and I really want to see it. However I hadn't seen Split yet, so I decided to finally watch it so I can go see Glass when it comes out. Oh yeah, haven't seen Unbreakable (2000) either, so that one's probably going to be next.

The peculiar thing about this movie is that apart from the problematic aspect of it, it should be thrilling. And it sort of works, it's thrilling, it's beautifully shot... But it ends up being weirdly clumsy and not as good as I was hoping it would be. There's certain awkwardness about it, something that makes it feel kind of "meh".

This film is definitely too long. I'd edit out all the flashbacks because what purpose did they serve? They gave us something about Casey's past, sure, but did we need it? Did it actually affect anything?

Best part about this movie is James McAvoy's performance. He's a gifted actor and can pull off playing different personalities well.

The problematic aspect I mentioned? Holy shit is this movie disrespectful to actual people with DID.

I'm fine seeing this movie once and I don't regret it, but I definitely don't feel like watching it again. On some level it just doesn't work, and that's a shame. I wanted to like this movie.
